    Meeting Minutes
    May 16, 2007
    6:30
    Doyle Room 103
In Attendance Mary Kay Battaglia, Annette Montgomery, Jen Rubin, Anita Samansky, Mary TeSelle, TJ Mertz, Deb Gurke, Barb Katz and Troy Dassler. I am sure that the only one that is spelled right. And after the day I have had, I only can hope that it is right. Next Meeting we will have a sign in.

We made introductions and began to discuss what are the goals and mission of the ABCMadison group.
We discussed finding out about the various plans that are currently being floating around the legislature. We brainstormed various ideas of what we could do to change how schools are funded. We discussed posting the plans that are currently out there on this listserve. After much discussion we decided that we would modify the MMSD legislative agenda to meet our own agenda.
    Currently the MMSD agenda reads,

“Work to create a school finance system that provides the resources necessary to guarantee that every student meets the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards, the standard of achievement set by the Legislature. Support a thorough legislative review of Wisconsin’s tax system, examining all taxing. The revise system to pay for K-12 schools should embrace progressive taxation, reduce the burden of residential property taxpayers and ensure tax fairness.”

We revised it to better match our agenda as a group.

“Work to create a school finance system that provides the resources necessary to guarantee that every student meets the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards, the standard of achievement set by the Legislature. Support a thorough legislative review of Wisconsin’s tax system, examining all taxing. The revise funding system to pay for K-12 schools should ensure tax fairness.”

We eventually decided that our first step to meet our agenda is to raise awareness of the school funding crisis in Wisconsin.

To meet this goal we are going to develop a presentation that can be used in PTO meetings, Rotary, etc.

At our next meeting we will:
Ask members to bring powerpoint presentations, videos, articles, etc.
Review materials to educate ourselves and create one or more presentations.
    Create/expand talking points.
    Discuss most frequently asked questions.
    Decide on handouts.
Create a list of possible places where we can present.

In groups of two or three we will practice the presentations and use the summer months to educate X number of groups. That goal will be decided at the next meeting.

At our next meeting we will set up manageable goals for the next 1, 3, 6 months.

Members of this group are asked to bring a list with them of places where we could present the presentation that we are creating.

Please approve these meeting notes or post revisions.
